Buying & Selling a Car in the UAE
Can I buy a car that's missing its Mulkiya (registration card)?
Don't. A transfer in the UAE requires a valid Mulkiya (the vehicle registration card) and a clean record of fines and loans. A seller may say it's "lost, I'll reissue it", but more often there's an underlying transfer issue — the seller may not be the registered owner, the car may still be under bank finance, or fines may have piled up. Never pay anything before you've seen the Mulkiya in person.
How does the ownership transfer work?
Transfers go through the RTA in Dubai or the licensing authority of the relevant emirate, at Tasjeel and other registered vehicle centers. Buyer and seller (or their authorised representatives) attend with Emirates ID and the Mulkiya; the car needs a passed inspection where required, a valid insurance policy in the buyer's name, and no outstanding fines — the seller is expected to clear those first. If the paperwork is in order, the transfer completes the same day and a new Mulkiya is issued in the buyer's name.
Can I import a car from overseas?
Yes, but the rules are strict: the car must be left-hand drive and meet GCC specifications, customs duty (typically 5% of the vehicle's value) applies, and the car must pass a technical inspection before it can be registered. Port handling and registration fees are charged separately, and salvage or heavily damaged vehicles can be refused. Rules and fees change — confirm current requirements with the RTA or your emirate's licensing authority, or work with a registered clearing agent before you commit.
Can I buy a right-hand drive car in the UAE?
No. Traffic in the UAE drives on the right, and only left-hand drive vehicles can be registered for road use — right-hand drive cars are generally not eligible, with only narrow exceptions for classic vehicles. If you're importing, make sure the car is left-hand drive and GCC-compliant before any money changes hands.
Is insurance mandatory? Do I need comprehensive cover?
Third-party motor insurance is required by law before a car can be registered or driven in the UAE. Comprehensive cover is optional but strongly recommended for newer or higher-value cars. Premiums, coverage and no-claims discounts vary between insurers — read the policy before signing.
What should I check before buying a car?
Start with the Mulkiya — confirm the car is actually registered to the seller and free of bank finance or impounds. Then check the odometer, service history and maintenance records. View the car in daylight, start the engine cold, and on the test drive try the brakes, gear changes and steering play. If you're unsure, independent inspection services in Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah will check the car for a fee — a small investment that prevents costly surprises.
How does haggling work in the UAE?
Asking prices are usually open to negotiation, especially on private listings, and even more so on Urgent Sale ones. Open negotiations with specific issues you've noticed (scratched wheels, expiring registration, body dent) and use real comparisons from other UAE Cars listings. Polite but firm, and be willing to walk away. Lowball offers tend to end the conversation early.
How do I sell my car quickly?
Three things matter: realistic price, good photos, honest description. Browse comparable cars on UAE Cars and price just below average. Take 8–10 exterior and interior photos, ideally in daylight with the car clean. In the description, always state mileage, service history, accident history, registration expiry and whether there are any outstanding fines — answering the buyer's first questions in writing keeps your listing on the shortlist. If you need a fast sale, use the Urgent Sale tag and a meaningful price reduction.
